Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, March 11, 2020

The coronavirus has most companies concerned about the impact it will have on absenteeism and supply chain. The confirmed cases of people being diagnosed in the U.S. with coronavirus is nearing 1,000, and the death toll has risen to 29. 38 states plus the District of Columbia have reported cases. While the coronavirus is new and much is not known, here is what experts from the World Health Organization, the Center for Disease Control, and other experts have learned:

• The virus is moderately infectious, mainly through sneezing and coughing, but possibly also contact with surfaces that have been contaminated with sneezes and coughs.
• More than 80% of the confirmed coronavirus cases are not severe and people generally make a full recovery.
• The mild cases may resemble having the common cold. The ones that are worse mostly resemble having the flu.

Encourage your employees to…
Practice good hygiene
• Stop handshaking – use other noncontact methods of greeting
• Clean hands at the door and schedule regular hand washing reminders by email
• Create habits and reminders to avoid touching their faces and cover coughs and sneezes
• Disinfect surfaces like doorknobs, tables, desks, and handrails regularly
• Increase ventilation by opening windows or adjusting air conditioning
Be careful with meetings and travel
• Use videoconferencing for meetings when possible
• When not possible, hold meetings in open, well-ventilated spaces
• Consider adjusting or postponing large meetings or gatherings
• Assess the risks of business travel
Stay home if…
• They are feeling sick
• They have a sick family member in their home
