Bookmasters upgrades digital book manufacturing fleet with Canon Océ inkjet equipment

April 21, 2017

Bookmasters, one of the largest providers of customized book publishing services in the United States, has expanded its book manufacturing services with the addition of new inkjet digital book manufacturing equipment to its Ashland, Ohio facility.

Bookmasters has added the following:

  • An Océ VarioPrint i300 (with ColorGrip) color sheet fed inkjet press, making Bookmasters only the second U.S. book manufacturer to offer this technology
  • An Océ ColorStream 3900 monochrome inkjet press for high production one color
  • An upgrade to its toner equipment with the addition of two Océ VarioPrint 6320’s

Bookmasters’ investment in this digital book manufacturing equipment complements its existing digital printing capabilities for short-run digital book printing and print-on-demand (POD).

This multi-million dollar investment increases Bookmasters’ digital production capacity by 90%.

“This improvement to our digital print platform brings us up-to-date technologically, adds capacity, improves our SLA’s, and improves our service levels to our customers,” said Ken Fultz, general manager at Bookmasters. “We’re very proud of this expansion to our partnership with Canon Solutions America.”

New Interactive Local Print Establishments Dashboard

Printing Industries of America (PIA)' s Center for Print Economics and Management has created an interactive dashboard on printing and related support activities establishments in nearly every county in the United States. The information provided by the dashboard gives printers immediate capabilities to evaluate local markets and market share potentials. For industry suppliers, the system enables instant evaluation of local market opportunities. The information is based upon the most recently released data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns Database and is subject to the counties identified as having a printer coded as NAICS 323 according to the U.S Census Bureau.

Key features of the Local Print Production Dashboard include:

  • Easy-to-understand gradient color variants
  • The ability to zoom in to a key area
  • Full access to all counties (an exclusive member benefit)
  • Using the dashboard is as easy as knowing how to use a mouse.

Users simply operate their scroll wheel to zoom into the counties that are of interest and hover over the counties to see the county name and the shipment volume. According to the dashboard creator, PIA Economist Tai McNaughton, “This interactive tool allows PIA members to quickly assess the economic footprint of their local print market and provides them a competitive advantage over non-members.”
